About Us
The Ballarat Sports Foundation Inc (BSF) is a non-profit community project that aims to encourage and support local sportspeople to achieve in their chosen sport and a partnership between the Ballarat Community and Corporate sector.
Over 20 years ago several local business people, all with a passion for sport, identified a need to establish a fund to be used to financially assist Ballarat based athletes compete at a higher level whist working towards realizing their potential. It was widely accepted that many of our promising athletes were unable to participate in competition at Regional, State, National and International level due to financial constraints.
The BSF has a Scholarship Program where all Ballarat registered athletes are invited to apply for funding two times per year to assist with out-of-pocket competition costs whilst competing at a higher level. A Sub-Committee specifically established for the purpose of assessing all funding requests then makes its recommendations to the Board.
With the on-going support of our loyal sponsors, donors and members the Foundation has been able to satisfy the needs of many athletes throughout the region. Without this commitment it would not be possible to maintain our level of support resulting in depriving many promising sportspeople the opportunity to reach their potential. In dollar terms we remain the No. 1. provider of funding to athletes within the region.
The financial benefits to Ballarat are obvious when our athletes are competitive at Regional, State, National or International events. Who will forget Mona’s 2000 Sydney Olympics farewell? The BSF sponsorship program gives our sponsors the opportunity to support sport at all levels.
Importantly it eliminates the need for sponsors to make the difficult and time-consuming decisions regarding individual requests for financial assistance.
As our Patron and very strong advocate of the BSF, Steve Moneghetti stated “it is clearly evident many local athletes would not have achieved the high level of performance without the financial assistance at an early and critical stage of their development. In this regard the Community of Ballarat along with the sporting fraternity is very heavily indebted to the Ballarat Sports Foundation. I urge Corporate Ballarat to assist this very worthwhile organization continue in its endeavors with sport promotion.”
We now have (12) local athletes to have received funding through our program have represented Australia at the Olympics two of whom are medallists.
You may be interested to learn that an amount of $450,000 has been allocated to over 1000 athletes through our program. Importantly all of these funds are raised from the local community.
